  • A Color Story

Explore the history of color and create a monochromatic mixed media artwork! Did you know that pink was “for boys” until the 1950’s? We’ll playfully dive into the emotional and social histories of different hues, looking at how the meanings of color have shifted over time. Once we’ve sparked some inspiration, it’s time to get messy. You’ll choose one single color to be your focus for the day and then we’ll: • Start with a layer of collage using a wide variety of unusual materials. • Add depth by using your color in different mediums such as paints, pencils, pastels, and markers. • Finish with details in tints (mixed with white) and shades (mixed with black). By limiting our palette to one color, we’ll discover an infinite world of tones, tints, and textures. Whether you’re a seasoned artist or just looking to play with some paint, you’ll leave with a unique mixed-media piece and a new perspective on the colors that surround us.

  • Tear & Reconstruct -- May 23

Deconstruct and reconstruct with teaching artist Taryn Sutter in this exploration of Emotional Art. This workshop will blend personal exploration, emotional release, and abstract collage/painting in a safe, poetic, & transformative environment. When we tear paper, it is a symbol for breaking down. It is allowing us the ability to “let go,”  while we process our trapped emotions, and feelings of loss, transition, and transformation. When processing strong emotions, the emotions that trigger a physiological response, using watercolor will allow us the fluidity from the paint to release control that often keeps us “stuck.” When creating a collage piece, the tearing of its paper and cutting of materials, will evoke a sense of calm. By replacing the paper and reassembling its pieces, we are allowing ourselves to go on an emotional exploration of self reflection and discovery to re-gather. The end piece with its image form, is your story in a visual narrative. About the Teaching Artist: With a richly layered background that spans cultures, techniques, and lived experiences, Taryn Sutter is an art teacher who brings far more than technical instruction into her classroom—she creates meaningful connection with students through her teaching. Her practice is rooted in the belief that art is not confined to a canvas or studio, but exists in every moment, every perspective, and every individual willing to see it. A highly skilled and accomplished artist in her own right, Taryn blends mastery with deep empathy, creating a transformational environment where students feel both challenged and supported. She encourages them to look beyond perfection and instead discover authenticity—guiding each student to recognize the beauty in their own voice as an artist. Taryn uses art as a powerful pathway to healing, growth, and resilience—showing students how creative expression can illuminate even the most difficult experiences. In her classroom, art is not just something you make; it is something you feel, process, and carry with you. Students leave her classes not only with sharpened artistic skills, but with a renewed sense of self, a stronger voice, and a deeper appreciation for the world around them. Taryn is a much-loved art teacher of 5 years in the Middleton-Cross Plains school district. She holds a Masters degree in Elementary Education, a post-graduate degree in Art Education, and a BA in Cultural Anthropology.

  • Demystifying Art Therapy -- May 22

In this event, art therapist Kelly Toltzien will offer a glimpse into what art therapy actually is and what it can look like—moving beyond common misconceptions and into hands-on, experiential exploration. This is a space to try, notice, and engage—no art experience required. Through mixed-media experimentation, learn about the goals and methods of art therapy, and how it can support reflection, self-expression, and connection. Kelly will guide us through a brief grounding exercise to help settle into the space and transition into artmaking. We’ll move through a series of creative stations, each featuring a different material: markers, paint sticks, and collage. Once we’re engaged in intuitive mark-making and drawing, our brains will be ready to slow down and consider our shifting moods, thoughts, sensations, or levels of comfort and ease. After each station, there will be a brief pause for reflection, which can be captured through journaling, sketching, or quiet contemplation. Then, we’ll transform the work into a small booklet or zine, incorporating collage to complete the piece and integrate it with our inner experiences. We’ll close with an opportunity for self-reflection and optional sharing and connection with the group. Join us for a new experience that prioritizes mindfulness in the process over the perfection of the product! Choose the amount that feels right to you. $45 | $35 | $25 About the Teaching Artist Kelly Toltzien is a Board Certified Art Therapist, Licensed Professional Counselor, and the founder of Wildflower Therapies, a mental health practice rooted in accessible, integrative, and trauma-informed care. With over 15 years of experience, she works with teens, young adults, and adults using creative and body-based approaches to support healing and self-exploration. Her work is grounded in the belief that you don’t need to be an artist to benefit from art therapy. Instead, creativity becomes a way to better understand yourself—especially when words don’t quite capture the full picture. In addition to her clinical work, Kelly has experience in teaching and facilitating, bringing a thoughtful and engaging approach to group spaces. She draws from expressive arts, somatic practices, and mindfulness to create environments that feel welcoming, low-pressure, and grounded in curiosity rather than perfection.
