Join us for a watercolor class designed for all ages and skill levels! Teaching artist Kathy Maurer will guide us as we draw and paint small 1.5" x 1.5" paper squares in Spring themes. It's the perfect opportunity for a fun watercolor tutorial, along with an exploration of supplies and color palettes. Choose 1 of 2 Options: $50 Solo Option (frame included) — Paint a seasonal trio of squares and at the end of class, we'll mount them in a single line of a 6"x8" wooden white frame. Hang it for your own enjoyment or make a unique gift! $75 Group Option (frame included) — Bring your people and work together to paint sixteen small paper squares. Then mount them in four rows of four in a 13"x13" frame. It's a wonderful opportunity for each member of the group to showcase their artwork as a whole — and a memento of a special time spent creating together. About the Teaching Artist: Kathy Maurer I've been fortunate to work as a full-time artist my entire adult life. I studied Communication & Art at The Ohio State University, and that dual focus still shapes how I think: I’m always considering both what I’m making and what it’s saying. For 25 years, I worked as a jewelry designer, building my company, Katcando Jewelry, around one-of-a-kind statement pieces. Using sterling silver, found objects, resin, and vintage trade beads, I created wearable compositions balancing craft with storytelling. Each piece was part sculpture, part memory-keeper—where materials carried their own history and meaning. I sold my work throughout the Midwest at juried art shows, including several stops at the Madison Art Fair on the Square. It was during Covid that I permitted myself to explore other artistic avenues. I no longer felt compelled to specialize in a single medium; instead, I welcomed the freedom of moving between disciplines. This shift led me back to my love of painting, collage, surface pattern design, and paper arts—areas that still follow the instincts that guided my jewelry design: layering, texture, and the quiet power of objects brought into relationship with one another. My process remains intuitive and materials-led. I let the work reveal what it wants to become. Whether assembling paper, applying paint, or combining unexpected elements, I’m drawn to the space where structure meets play. Working across mediums is deeply freeing, and it keeps me engaged with what I value most: making art that’s honest and reflective of the world around me.
